What's The Best Water To Drink?

Water is essential, we all know that. But many people think all water is created equally and that couldn’t be further from the truth. If you wish to actually hydrate your body, and thus avoid pain and constipation (which are dehydration problems) then you need to drink water that you actually absorb and assimilate.

Our bodies need more than just pure H2O in order to utilize its hydrating benefits. There are minerals in water such as calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium that are necessary for our bodies many natural processes. When you drink water that has been overly filtered you actually don’t absorb it the same way because it lacks most of those minerals and nutrients that your body needs to absorb it. Most bottled water is filtered in a way that takes away minerals leaving behind a liquid that does not get absorbed the same way, leading to dehydration despite all the bottled water you may drink.

A good example of water that is lacking in minerals is distilled water, which is so overly purified that people complain about never feeling satisfied or hydrated when they drink it. The reason this happens is because it lacks the minerals that it gets from rocks and sediment in nature. Water quality is measured in what is called TDS. “TDS, short for Total Dissolved Solids, is a measure of the combined total of organic and inorganic substances dissolved in water. TDS is expressed in milligrams per liter (mg/L) or parts per million (ppm) and includes anything present in the water other than the pure H2O molecules.” (1). Distilled water tends to be extremely low in TDS making it not an ideal source of drinking water. It is better used to disinfect and clean stuff which is better used for your dirty floor rather than your internal organs.

With that being said, in this blog I am going to share with you the three worst types of water and the three best types of water for your body.

Worst Types Of Water

When water is filtered in the below ways, they not only lose life giving minerals but they also get treated with all sorts of toxic chemicals like chlorine (which destroys the gut) and fluoride (which destroys the pineal gland and brain). They often also pass through pipes that are made of heavy metals causing you to consume metals like lead, silver, lithium, mercury, lead, tin, antimony, arsenic, cadmium, beryllium (5). “A sharp intake of any of the above metals will poison you and induce nausea, vomiting, cramping, headache and vertigo. Even small amounts ingested over a long period of time can have dreadful health consequences. Should your body take up too much heavy metal you can expect the following: bone marrow loss, tremor, memory problems, kidney failure, neurological malfunction and other issues, heart and blood vessel disease, depression, and more” (5).


“Water is turned into a vapor, leaving minerals behind. Vapors are then condensed into water again” (2). Many doctors will tell you this is the best water to drink. But have you ever actually drank this and then felt completely hydrated? I know I didn’t! I would pee every five minutes when drinking this because I was not absorbing it. This “water” is pretty much just H2O with no minerals. Oftentimes companies will add a few minerals to help it but the result is never the same level of satisfaction as an artesian, mineral, well, or spring water source. Just compare them one day by buying a Walmart brand of distilled water and then taking a sip of that and waiting an hour, then take a sip of your natural water source and you will definitely FEEL and taste the difference.

Reverse Osmosis

“Water is forced through membranes to remove minerals” (2). This is the water system I first got when I became a health nut, however, I quickly realized how parched I was all the time after drinking it. I would never feel satisfied and my joints were hurting more than ever. This is because I was not absorbing the RO water because it was essentially without any minerals. If you choose to go this route (although I would plead you not to) then make sure to pay the extra few hundred for a remineralizer so that you actually absorb this water. Most water bottle companies use this as their filtration type, which is why you have so many chronically dehydrated people in the world.


“Bottlers of all types of waters typically use ozone gas, an antimicrobial agent, instead of chlorine to disinfect the water. (Chlorine can add residual taste and odor to the water)” (2).

Best Types Of Water

When water flows through nature by passing through rocks, sediment, dirt, and plants it picks up all those minerals that help make the human body work better. This process from the top of a mountain as snow melts down to the river over years and years picking up those TDS giving the water the most minerals and nutrients. This natural process makes this water much more absorbable and health giving than any of the purified methods listed above. You will notice that not only the taste of the waters listed below are better, but also are more hydrating, and thus satisfying to the palate and body. Below are the best natural sources of water that have the most TDS and are the most hydrating and beneficial for your body.

Artesian Water

“This water is collected from a well that taps an aquifer layers of porous rock, sand and earth that contain water which is under pressure from surrounding upper layers of rock or clay. When tapped, the pressure in the aquifer, commonly called artesian pressure, pushes the water above the level of the aquifer, sometimes to the surface” (2).

Sometimes this water has been underground for millions of years before it finally came to the top where you can actually collect and drink it. This long time adds many more minerals making it the best quality you can find. So, when you have the chance to drink any water I would first recommend artesian water first due to the high amount of Total Dissolved Solvents it contains.

Mineral Water

“Those people are the FDA, which actually regulates bottled water. They say that natural mineral waters must contain at least 250 parts per million (ppm) “total dissolved solids,” originating from a geologically and physically protected underground water source. In other words, mineral waters have to come out of the earth that way” (3).

According to this study on Natural Mineral Waters: Chemical Characteristics and Health Effects (4), mineral water contains over seven macronutrients and over nine micronutrients. This makes for very healthful water because it gives our bodies things it can’t make on its own.

This water tends to be bubbly and sparkly, which some people might not enjoy as much as me. But, lucky for me, where I am living currently, in Manitou Springs, Colorado, there are seven free mineral springs to choose from with some of the sweetest most satisfying bubbly water I’ve ever had.

Spring Water

“Derived from an underground formation from which water flows naturally to the surface, this water must be collected only at the spring or through a borehole that taps the underground formation feeding the spring. If some external force is used to collect the water through a borehole, the water must have the same composition and quality as the water that naturally flows to the surface” (2). Going to a free natural spring with life giving water is one of the greatest features of mankind, in my opinion. If I were you I would never buy bottled water again after learning about free spring water. Even if you have to drive to one once a week with a few big containers, it is still a way better choice for your body than purified bottled water.

Well Water

“This is water from a hole bored or drilled into the ground, which taps into an aquifer” (2). This is the water many people associate with medieval times, with the stones formed in a circle around a deep hole with a bucket that picks up the water. However, today there are still wells used and they are more advanced than a stone hole in the ground. You can get one installed for a few grand but you will have endless clean water for life.


No matter who you are, you can benefit more by drinking from a natural water source than drinking from a purified water source. My favorite water will always be mineral or artesian, but if you can’t find one in your area then try finding a spring and making the effort to get good clean water as a part of your lifestyle and you will see a huge difference in your level of energy, the feeling in your joints, and the lack of constipation. Spring, mineral, artesian, and well water will absolutely change your life for the better. Water is life.
