If we want to avoid a toxic life then we must first understand the consequences of a toxic lifestyle on our physical body, emotions, and spirit. A toxic lifestyle creates a toxic body. A toxic body creates a toxic brain. A toxic brain creates toxic thoughts, toxic emotions, and toxic words. Toxic words can create toxic relationships steamed with resentment, regret, anger, frustration, and anxiety. This is how a toxic lifestyle creates a toxic life.
In today’s blog article we will talk about the consequences of a toxic lifestyle on your body, mind, and spirit. So, here is why you must clean up your life, body, and brain with a non-toxic lifestyle.
We Are Full Of Chemicals
The CDC did a study to “test for 212 chemicals, including 44 pesticides — and found most of them” (1). Years of toxic exposure lead to problems in virtually every part of your body. Toxins from our food, water, air, cleaning supplies, and environment accumulate in our liver and fat cells. The more fat a person has the more toxins they will be carrying around. This is why it is really unsafe to lose a bunch of body fat too quickly because your liver can’t handle all those toxins in such a short time.
Those Toxins Can Transfer Through Your Womb
It doesn’t just affect you either, it can affect your unborn child as well. According to the Pesticide Action Network of North America, “Mothers pass a lifetime of chemical accumulation across the placenta during pregnancy, where they become part of a developing infant’s first environment. Scientists now understand that if the timing is “right,” these exposures during fetal development can result in birth defects, learning disabilities or infertility later in life” (1).
Can Cause Skin Issues
Pesticides, toxins, and other chemicals need a place to detox from and when our livers are too full of toxins then they have to be released some other way and this usually occurs from the skin. So, if you have lots of acne, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, or other skin problems then most likely you will have a toxic liver from too many pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, heavy metals, chemicals, and foreign agents that have accumulated and not been detoxified properly.
Can Cause Gut, Gas, And Gastrointestinal Problems
Another physical consequence of a toxic lifestyle is a host of gastrointestinal problems, which include gut issues. This is a very complex subject that requires more time but for brevity's sake, I’ll keep it short. Our gut consists of our small intestine and large intestine. Everything we eat passes through this portal and into our blood, various glands, and organs from there. Our guts are filled with millions of good AND bad bacteria (80% good, 20% bad). Good bacteria help us breakdown and assimilate our foods. However, if we eat foods and drink water filled with pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides then it can kill those good bacteria and thus cause indigestion, malnourishment, constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, and a ton of other side effects after every meal. As a result, our bad bacteria will begin to overpopulate causing Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and candida (yeast) overgrowth. Eventually what happens is a leaky gut where undigested food particles get into your bloodstream causing an inflammatory reaction that leads to autoimmune conditions like Crohn's Disease, IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease), or Rheumatoid arthritis.
Mental & Emotional Consequences
Can Cause A Broken Brain
A toxic body leads to a toxic brain. A toxic brain is one that can’t focus or concentrate which comes from a diet full of the wrong foods and heavy metals. The glycemic index will tell you how quickly a food breaks down into sugar which causes a spike in insulin and thus a burst of energy (and eventual crash). Foods high in the glycemic index (aka grains, corn, and sugar) will cause problems with energy and focus because the energy and eventual crash come and go way too quickly (2). Mark Hyman in his book, The UltraMind Solution, tells of many case studies where the clients have all sorts of physical and mental/emotional issues including ADHD, allergies, asthma, hives, stomach problems, and headaches. The common issue with most of his clients was an abundance of inflammatory foods (including food allergens and food sensitivities), nutritional imbalances (from lack of healthy food), and poor detoxification (from heavy metal accumulation) (3).
Can Cause Depression & Other Mood Issues
A toxic lifestyle can lead to depression because our gut makes most of our serotonin and when we eat inflammatory foods, instead of creating serotonin, it creates a chemical called Kynurenine. “Cognitive deficits in schizophrenia are associated with imbalances in the enzymes that break down kynurenine. Kynurenine production is increased in Alzheimer's disease and cardiovascular disease where its metabolites are associated with cognitive deficits and depressive symptoms”. This is not what you want if happiness and sanity are your goals. So, avoiding inflammatory foods and thus a toxic lifestyle will make for less depression and emotional issues (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9).
Can Cause Cognitive Problems
Heavy metals have a profound effect on our mental-emotional wellbeing. Just one example of this is copper. Dr. Lawrence Wilson states, “panic attacks, migraines, spaciness, brain fog, mind racing, insomnia, nervousness, irritability, and others also often involve copper” (10). Copper imbalance is very common but remembers that there are dozens of heavy metals and copper is just one, so it is important to minimize exposure to all of them. Dr. Hyman shared some studies regarding heavy metals (11). “Mercury has been associated with myriad gastrointestinal as well as autoimmune and cognitive problems (12). Lead toxicity has been associated with cognitive and behavioral problems in children (13). In a recent groundbreaking study, lead toxicity and environmental toxins were clearly linked to ADHD” (14). So, it’s important that we avoid these heavy metals from our household items, cookware, and even toys made with paint that’s full of lead.
The Effects On Our Sleep
In order to talk about the spiritual consequences of a toxic lifestyle, we must address the “spirit gland” which is our pineal gland that sits in the center of our brains and is called by some, “The Third Eye”. In reptiles, it has a cornea, retina, and lens. For us, this gland acts by receiving light information from the eyes and then sends out hormonal messages to the body telling our body about the length of daylight (also known as circadian rhythm), whether it’s light or dark out, and what season you’re in, and even regulating body temperature. Since the pineal gland also produces melatonin, which is a serotonin-derived hormone that modulates sleep patterns” (15), our sleep can be greatly affected by issues with our pineal gland such as “calcification”.
Plays a Role On All Human Functions
The pineal gland plays role in almost every role in our bodies. According to Jacob Liberman in his book, Light: Medicine of the Future: How We Can Use It to Heal Ourselves NOW, he says, “Today, the pineal is recognized as playing a major role in every aspect of human function. It acts as the “regulator of regulators.” Aside from its documented effects on reproductive function, growth, body temperature, blood pressure, motor activity, sleep, tumor growth, mood, and the immune system, it also seems to be a factor in longevity” (16).
Can Disconnect Us From Our Unconscious Mind
According to Rick Strassman, author of the book, The Spirit Molecule, our pineal gland has the highest ratio of serotonin anywhere within your body, which is a critical component for the production of pineal melatonin. Serotonin affects energy and mood. Strassman goes on to say, “The pineal also has the ability to convert serotonin to tryptamine, a critical step in DMT formation. The unique enzymes that convert serotonin, melatonin, or tryptamine into psychedelic compounds also are present in extraordinarily high concentrations in the pineal” (17). If you have ever had a dream then you have felt, seen, and heard the effects of this “spirit molecule” DMT in action. A calcified pineal gland can lead to a lack of dream recall and thus no connection to your unconscious mind.
Can Disconnect Us From Spirit
Most importantly the pineal gland is our path to the divine. Some, such as the Greeks have called the pineal gland “the instrument of our spiritual development, since it is physically activated by light, and wakes your brain up it was believed to be a link to higher realms of thought and consciousness because it helps transform your brain from sluggish-with-sleep to awake and alert” (18). So, if you notice people who are “asleep” or “plugged into the matrix”, you know - people who are completely unaware of their spiritual essence and unaware of their divine connection to all things, maybe a bit more materialistic than most and completely unconscious in their thoughts, words, and actions then chances are they have a calcified pineal gland from their toxic lifestyles.
In conclusion, it is vitally important for your mind, body, and soul that you live a non toxic lifestyle so that you don’t suffer all the physical, emotional, and spiritual consequences that come from such a heavy burden of toxins through your air, food, water, and environment. In the Part 2 will discuss what causes these issues, and in Part 3 we will discuss how to start creating a non-toxic life (what to take out and what to replace). See you soon!
