How An Inflamed Gut Means Back Pain

You’ve been stretching, fixing your posture, exercising, and avoiding sitting but you still have back pain? Maybe, what Hippocrates said, “all diseases begin in the gut”, can lead us to explain why you can be experiencing pain even when you have fixed everything else.

The problem comes from the foods you are eating. That’s news to some but you should know by now that the foods you eat affect your body... it’s so obvious. You know the saying, “You are what you eat.” Those Cheetos made of genetically modified corn and pasteurized milk cheese solids are not what your body was made to digest. I know, I know, it sucks...but it’s the truth. What I want to do is explain how and why those foods can cause you pain.

It has to do with your body’s “natural weight belt”. When your gut is inflamed it shuts off the TVA (Transverse Abdominis). It’s the inner abdominal layer (underneath your 8 pack, aka rectus abdominis). It acts like a weight belt around your spine by creating a tight vacuum around it when you move, thus protecting your spine.

However, if it gets shut off it can’t do its job. The TVA is there to protect your spine from any impacts. The problem occurs when it can no longer contract to surround your spine, like an octopus hugging a tree. When the organs surrounding your gut are inflamed it will cause any muscles surrounding it to shut off. That includes the TVA and your other abdominal muscles. If your TVA is shut off then the constant vibration of your car, the bending with a curved spine, and the sudden movements you are doing every single day are causing your spine to take the direct impact because there is nothing protecting it!

Many of us eat foods we are intolerant to because we don’t listen to our guts (no pun intended) because we weren’t taught how to eat properly (or move properly for that matter). Foods like gluten, dairy, and grains are notorious for causing gut problems. They’re just SO addicting (I’ll explain that another day).

From now on you must become a food detective to figure out what foods are causing your gut issues. Anything that you are intolerant to or allergic to will shut off your TVA and start the back problems again. You need your TVA to work which means your gut should not be inflamed especially chronically.

So, what foods cause an inflamed gut? Well, that is not an easy question to answer, because while there are foods that no one should eat, there are also foods that I eat without issues but if you eat might cause all sorts of problems. For instance, rice gives my brother arthritis. But for me, it gives me dandruff. He can eat corn no problem I can’t without feeling itchy all over. What about a food intolerance test? In my experience, most food intolerance tests are non-conclusive or do not work, because despite the horrible gas and diarrhea I get from milk, it says I’m not allergic OR intolerant to milk. Yet, I know better. The best way to find out is to go PALEO! I have written about this before. Check out my article on the Paleo way of eating entitled, “Burn Body Fat Without Trying By Eating This Way.” Check out that article so you know why and how to “Go Paleo”.

Also, from now on you must become a food detective to figure out what works for you. You will have to read food labels and stay away from certain inflammatory foods. Those main culprits being grains & gluten, dairy, refined industrial seed & vegetable oils, processed sugar, microwave food, packaged foods, processed salt, and any foods you are allergic to. You basically need to eat as if you were in the wild, you know - the way nature intended.

There are so many fruits and vegetables out there you just need to go outside your usual list. The best thing you can do while shopping is to avoid the inside aisles and only shop on the outsides. Seafood, meat, fruit, and veggies that is what you are going for. These tend to be highly ANTI-inflammatory.

In conclusion, you need your natural weight belt to work properly so it can contract and relax when necessary to protect your spine. So, from here on out do yourself (and gut) a huge favor and avoid those inflammatory foods that shut off your TVA because most people are intolerant to them. If you make these changes you will avoid back pain altogether while also protecting your gut.
